The Portland Timbers got the job done on Decision Day, dispatching Austin FC 2-0 at Q2 Stadium to close out the 2026 MLS Regular Season. Ariel Lassiter scored in the second minute, and after weathering the storm Kristoffer Velde iced the game with an absolute belter in the 70th minute.
The win, along with results elsewhere in the league, mean that Portland has qualified for the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs as the 7 seed. For the first time since qualifying for the postseason since its inception, the Timbers will avoid the Wild Card play-in game and advance directly to Round One of the playoffs.
Lineups & Prematch
The stakes of course could not be overstated for Portland on Decision Day. Heading into Austin in 8th place, the Timbers were in control of their own destiny. A win, and they're in the postseason, likely as the 8 seed in the Wild Card play-in game. There were other scenarios were a draw or even a loss could wind up being enough, but three points was the only guarantee.
It was also the only way for Portland to have a shot to sneak into 7th place, pending results elsewhere.
For the massive occasion, Marti Cifuentes stuck to the guys who got the team to that spot and rolled out an unchanged XI from last weekend, who were able to tally a comfortable 3-1 win at home over the Houston Dynamo.

Jimer Fory and Kamal Miller, who missed last weekend due to a concussion and red card suspension respectively, were available off the bench.
Recap & Highlights
If you were anything like me at kickoff, your heart was already beating in your ears and your nerves were sky high. An early goal from the Timbers would do wonders to help me relax a bit, but I wasn't sure if they would be able to – wait oh my god that's exactly what they did.
2' GOAL TIMBERS! – Lassiter (0-1)
Off of Austin's very first attack of the match, the Timbers won the ball back and came charging forward. Ariel Lassiter played a quick one-two with Vincent Janssen on the right wing, and the big Dutchman delivered a great slide pass into space for Ari to run onto. The Costa Rican forward took it all the way himself, and fired home past Brad Stuver into the bottom corner from a tight angle.
The goal was Lassiter's eighth of the season, a career high, reinforcing what has been an absolutely massive 2026 for the green & gold. Big Vinny was also picking up right where he left off last weekend, recording his fourth straight goal involvement for Portland on the assist.
It was an absolute dream start for the Timbers, and showed that unlike Decision Day's past Portland showed up ready to play from the jump for this one.
It got better for Portland in the 11th minute, when Real Salt Lake took the lead over the LA Galaxy. In the live table, LA losing and Portland winning saw the two sides swap positions in the standings, with the Timbers up into 7th and out of the Wild Card rounds. RSL added a second goal two minutes later, meaning that the 7 seed was at the moment Portland's to lose.
But that doesn't mean that it would be easy, as Austin reminded the Timbers at right around the same time RSL was scoring against LA.
13' Save POR – Pantemis
Portland's backline was caught high and ATX pinged a ball over the top for Jon Gallagher. The wily veteran fired a shot from a tight angle that pinged off the underside of the crossbar and out. The ball thankfully didn't cross the line, and on replay it showed that James Pantemis got a finger on the shot to push it up and off the bar.
It was a great save by Pants and Portland survived, but it was a heart-dropping reminder of how razor-thin the margins were on Decision Day for Portland.
Holding to their 1-0 lead, Portland kept a measured and controlled approach to the match. They were selective in pushing their numbers up, and usually tried to hit on the break when possible. Janssen was active once again, dropping deep into the midfield to facilitate counter-attacks and ping balls forward.
However, the Timbers weren't able to create any opportunities that were as good as Ari's second minute goal. Outside of that, the only other two shots Portland was able to generate were a pair from Eric Izoita in the 8th and 31st minute, with only the former being on target.
The home side started to grow into game more and more as the half wore on. Sporting the classic "two big lads up top" approach, Austin proved to be more and more adept at knocking down crosses back into the box for trailing runners to latch onto. Portland's backline didn't break, but man did they bend a ton.
It never quite felt like the defense could figure out how to balance tracking initial attacking runs and the trailers. As Portland got pushed deeper and deeper Austin started to find more space in the final third in front of the goal and in the box, yielding more space for the late arriving runners
That strategy yielded a few close opportunities for El Verde, and one in particular in the 40th minute required some heroics from two stalwarts of the backline.
40' Saves POR – Pantemis & Surman
A knockdown from Christian Ramirez resulted in Brandon Vazquez slamming a low shot on target, forcing a top-notch kick save from Pantemis to keep it out. Gallagher latched onto the rebound, and Finn Surman was in the perfect spot to block the follow-up effort (a sentence that has been written countless times before).
The late effort was emblematic of how much Austin had grown into the game. Portland came out blazing, but wilted as the half went on.
Still, however fortunate it may have been, they went into the locker room at halftime with a lead.
HALFTIME: Austin 0, Timbers 1
For as much good as Ari's early goal did for nerves (and for the standings), the gradual tilting of the field against Portland did the opposite. By halftime, tension felt just as high as it was at kickoff, and stress as well. More so than for obvious reasons, an early goal in the second half would very much be in Portland's best interest.
In an effort to do that, or perhaps rely on veteran presence and experience to see out the result, Cifuentes made a change at halftime for Portland, bringing on Cole Bassett for Eric Izoita.
46' SUBS POR: OFF Izoita // ON Cole Bassett
Now, I would have loved to make this paragraph very similar to the one at the top of the recap where I surprise myself by Portland scoring that aforementioned early goal. But I can't, as Austin came within inches of leveling affairs.
49' Miss ATX – Vazquez
A looping cross ended with a free header for Vazquez in the middle of Portland's box. The big striker will want his chance back, as he skied it well over the cross bar.
Just as emblematic as Austin's late chances were for how the first half ended, that chance was a sign of how the opening 20 minutes of the second half would be: Austin smashing on Portland's door trying to bust it down.
Wave after wave after wave of ATX pressure buffeted Portland's defense, with the Timbers struggling to gain any semblance of possession to keep things in check. Key blocks from Surman, important last-ditch stops from Joel Waterman and Ronald Hernandez, and some poor execution from Austin were the reasons that Portland maintained their advantage.
But the biggest reason was James "Maybe Canadian Jesus" Pantemis. The goalkeeper made a trio of saves within a six minute stretch to keep Austin out. In the 61st he lept at the last second to palm away a rip from distance. A minute later he did it again, catching a rising effort from outside the box. And the save in the 67th was the best of the bench in my opinion, as he made a great reaction to get down low and save a sizzling low strike through a forest of bodies.
It is safe to say that without Pants in Texas, Portland would not have had any hope to survive on Decision Day.
Still, it would be really nice to not have to rely upon goalkeeper heroics or defensive scrambles. Portland struggled mightily to maintain possession, and as results elsewhere made their hold on not only 7th place but also a postseason berth in general all the more tenuous, the match was crying out for someone in Portland to make some magic happen.
And then in swooped the Norwegian wildman to remind everyone, as the tattoo on his arm ironically states, "tranquilo".
70' GOAL TIMBERS!! – Velde (0-2)
The fiery forward cemented his status as the hottest player in MLS right now, as he uncorked an absolute thundersmash from outside the box. Veldinho collected a recycled ball just outside the 18-yard-box, and like a bolt of Norse lightning, cracked a belter into the top corner of the goal.
The sonic waves produced by the collective cheer across the Timbers fandom after that firecracker went in could probably power a small village. It was a massive goal for Portland's chances for three points, a postseason berth, and moving directly into the first round if results elsewhere held.
In the immediate sense, that goal sapped any kind of will or fight the home side had left, which I will admit I understand. Austin had enjoyed the lion's share of possession and shots, but had met a brick wall named James at every turn. And then they had to watch the biggest antagonist (complimentary) on the field drop an absolute worldy on them to put the game even further out of reach.
El Verde did their best to try scrap some honor and fight until the end, but they – along with everyone else – knew the match was over when Velde rippled the back of the net.
The rest of the game was academic, as Portland saw out the game to a 2-0 win on Decision Day, just their third shutout of the season.
FULLTIME: Austin 0, Timbers 2
About a minute after full time in Texas, the result in Utah also went final. RSL had beaten the LA Galaxy 2-1. And with that, it was official: the Timbers qualified for the 2026 playoffs in 7th place, avoiding the Wild Card play-in game.
It wasn't perfect and it was probably way too stressful than it needed to be, but it was enough for the Timbers in Texas. In a building they haven't lost in since 2021, Portland got the job done in what wound up being a fairly straightforward victory.
Ariel Lassiter hit 'em in the face early, James Pantemis put the team on his back with a seven save shutout performance between the sticks, and Kristoffer Velde once again proved that he can be a difference maker by scoring the insurance goal. Against opposition of a higher quality and with more to play for than pride, perhaps tonight goes the other way for the Timbers. They will need to be sharper in the playoffs, undoubtedly.
But the headline is that there will be playoffs. And none of that "wait is the Wild Card game actually the playoffs or is it just the postseason" type of ambiguous stuff. True blue first round best-of-three playoffs. The Timbers have a playoff series against FC Dallas on tap for a few weeks from now, and Providence Park will get one last men's soccer match before the year comes to a close.
Two months ago, Portland was left for dead. They were languishing below the playoff line and endured a seven-game winless run from September through mid-October. But they have now rattled off four straight wins and are unbeaten in their last five matches, and are storming into the playoffs as the hottest team in the league.
Can't think of a better way to end Decision Day 2026. Onward.
