Fear & Loathing in the Rose City

The vibes are absolutely rancid around the Timbers, and the way back is complicated - and maybe impossible.

Welp, here we are again folks.

Two weeks removed from what could have been a season-reviving, momentum boosting, turning point win, the Portland Timbers are instead one week removed from a momentum-killing, spirit dampening, and frustration-sparking spanking. The Timbers loss at Real Salt Lake last weekend was maybe the most lopsided 2-0 loss you'll ever see in soccer, and is up there for one of Portland's worst performances of the season.

Portland was thoroughly outclassed and outplayed, but what made it worst was that it continues a trend of maddeningly consistent inconsistency from the Timbers. "Win big one week, go and play like ass-and-a-half the next" seems to be the motto for the Timbers in 2026. And it's resulted in a team that constantly has their backs against the wall with nowhere to go.

The worst part is that the way through is getting cloudier and more complicated. It's not just enough to simply start winning soccer games anymore. This team might need an entire identity shift – and that might be impossible.
