The Portland Timbers and LA Galaxy drew 1-1 at Providence Park in a match marred by an first half red card brandished to Kamal Miller. Kristoffer Velde opened the scoring with his second goal in as many matches, and the Timbers defended admirably down a man, but couldn't keep Joao Klauss from finding an equalizer.
Prematch
Remember how promising the attacking play looked in Houston when Phil Neville deployed the 4-3-3? Well he switched back to the 4-2-3-1 one week later.

The backline remained unchanged, with James Pantemis forced into wearing a batman-style facemask following his head injury in Houston. Joao Ortiz replaced Alexander Aravena, dropping into a double pivot with Diego Chara behind David da Costa in the #10.
Antony returned from a one match absence to replace Ariel Lassiter in the starting lineup, swapping wings with Kristoffer Velde moving to the right. Up top, Kevin Kelsy got the nod ahead of Gage Guerra, who scored his first goal of the year in Portland's 3-2 loss to the Dynamo.
Unfortunately, José Caicedo's visa didn't arrive in time, and Cole Bassett missed his third consecutive match with a ankle/foot injury. That lack of midfield depth earned Eric Izoita his second of four possible call-ups to an MLS matchday roster following his goal-scoring debut against the Vancouver Whitecaps two weeks ago.
Match Highlights
The Timbers began the match in an extremely promising manner, holding a great defensive shape and progressing the ball through the lines to create several quality chances.
8' - The Timbers attacked through Velde down the right wing, who rolled a ball backwards for Diego Chara to float a delicious cross toward the back post. The cross was just just too high for the head of Kevin Kelsy, but good enough to hit Antony square in the face wide open at the back stick and agonizingly wide of goal. The Brazilian winger got a bloody nose for his efforts, requiring a kit change.

13' GOAL TIMBERS, 1-0 – Five minutes later, Antony redeemed his miss. He and Da Costa combined for a lovely series of play around the box, and the former slid a perfect ball into Velde's pass to thrash home the opening goal with his left foot. Two goals in two games for Velde, and the Timbers were well and truly on the front foot.
17' Red card Timbers – But everything changed when the VAR nation attacked... After showing Kamal Miller an initial yellow card for a foul on Joao Klauss, Drew Fischer was summoned over to the monitor, and upgraded the yellow to a red for serious foul play. I don't think that Miller and the Timbers can have any complaints with the call, as unfortunate as that is – His entire body weight is coming down on Klauss' achilles from behind.

23' Substitution – Following the red card, Neville swapped Kevin Kelsy for Alex Bonetig off the bench, switching the shape out-of-possession to a 5-3-1, with Antony dropping to left wingback and the midfield three going flat across the pitch.
In the ~10 minutes after the substitution, the Galaxy ratcheted up the pressure on Portland's net. Pantemis denied Klauss from close range in the 28th minute on a pulled-back cross from Marco Reus, but the Timbers would soon do what they always do: shoot themselves in the foot needlessly.
30' Goal Galaxy, 1-1 – In an effort to play the ball out from the back, Bonetig's pass intended for a double-teamed Da Costa was intercepted by the Galaxy, who made their way up the pitch and found the equalizing goal through Klauss. It's another giveaway leading to an opposition goal, something the Timbers are susceptible to when they're playing with 11 men.
Two minutes later Pantemis beat another Galaxy shot away for a corner, and it was looking like the visitors were going to run away with the result. To their credit, however, the Timbers battened down the hatches and got to halftime with the score level.
Halftime: Portland Timbers 1 - 1 LA Galaxy
An incredibly unfortunate red card completely changed the complexion of the match for the Timbers, who were off to their best collective start to a match in 2026. Joao Ortiz, who has been relentlessly crushed by his own supporters, shone in a defensive capacity, as did Jimer Fory, Finn Surman, and Diego Chara.
The Timbers began the second half attacking the North end, and earned their first corner of the match three minutes after emerging from the locker room. For the next 30 minutes the Galaxy dominated possession, but didn't create very many clear cut chances in the final third thanks to stout defending from the entire team in their own half.
61' – Brandon Bye was shown a yellow card for a late challenge.
68' Substitutions – Portland's pair of DPs struggled to impact the second half down a man, and Neville opted for the fresh legs of Alexander Aravena and Ian Smith to shore up the left side that was being overloaded by the Galaxy.
75' – Smith's industrious work high up the pitch won the ball back for the Timbers on the left wing, and the substitute fired a ball across the box that would have went into the back of the net given any sort of touch. Instead, Brandon Bye received the ball on the opposite side of the box, and his cross won a corner that was cleared by the Galaxy.
80' – Bonetig caught Reus late, and went into the book after the Galaxy attack faded into nothing.
84'Substitution – Another rare foray forward for the Timbers led to back-to-back scoring opportunities, the first of which was a blocked shot from Finn Surman on a cutback cross, the second on the rebound was an effort from Antony that flew over the crossbar. Providence Park was buoyed by the players' efforts, as well as Neville's final change, bringing Pipe Mora on for the aforementioned Antony.
The final minutes of regulation, plus three minutes of stoppage time, were largely the same from both teams: The Galaxy attacked poorly, and the Timbers' low block dealt with everything the visitors threw at them.

Recap
This game was a must-win for the Timbers, and although they looked like they would walk away from Providence Park with a comprehensive win, the red card was too much to overcome in their effort to earn three points. When it rains, it pours, and the Timbers currently find themselves in the middle of a monsoon.
"I don't think LA played a good game, and we should have hurt them even down a man," said a visibly frustrated Kristoffer Velde, who thought the Timbers would have won by "three or four goals" had they finished with 11 players on the pitch.
Depending on how you look at it, the upcoming two weeks off (international break) could be a blessing or a curse for a team that desperately need to take a step back, and a deep breath.
On one hand, it's two weeks to stew on a sour result that could have been so different. On the other, it's two weeks for Caicedo to finally secure his visa, and for Cole Bassett and Juan Mosquera to get fit and ready for an absolute gauntlet of fixtures for Portland.
I feel like an insane person for saying this given where the Timbers sit in the standings after five matches – 14th in the Western Conference on 4/15 possible points – but you can see the signs of life in this team. Joao Ortiz put in his best performance as a Timber, Jimer Fory locked up Gabriel Pec, Finn Surman was imperious in the air and on the ground, David da Costa unlocks so much for the midfield and attack, Velde is coming to life after a difficult start.
But with a stretch of Vancouver (A), LAFC (H), Minnesota (A), San Diego (A), RSL (A), the Timbers will need to pull off a few upsets to get their season on-track, and it's hard for supporters to get behind the team and see that happening:

Neville's post-game press conference was equal parts frustrated and dejected. For the first time in his tenure his mannerisms really felt like the very visible outside noise, and pressure to deliver results, is starting to affect him.
"We wanted to put on a performance for the supporters, and I think they saw today a team that was really connected, I thought in the first 20 minutes they saw a really high level team tactically, technically, confidence, trust" said Neville. "I'm disappointed for them, I'm disappointed for the owner, I'm disappointed for Ned [Grabavoy], I'm disappointed for everyone who's connected with this club that we couldn't... We couldn't deliver what we wanted to today because of things out of our control."
