Today, Portland Cherry Bombs FC have announced Janine Szpara as the club's first ever head coach.

The former USWNT goalkeeper brings decades of experience as a player and coach and will now lead the Cherry Bombs in their inaugural USL W League season.

“I want fans to know that I truly care,” said Szpara. “I care about the team, the players, the community, and the organization—and about making sure everyone gets the best out of this experience for themselves and for each other. That’s what matters most to me.”

She holds a U.S. Soccer A License and has worked at the youth level to the collegiate ranks. Her experience in the Rose City includes: head coach of the Portland Rain (WPSL) and coaching roles with Portland State University, Portland Thorns Academy, FC Mulhouse Portland, and other local youth programs. Szpara has also coached at Stanford, Cal, and Santa Clara as an assistant.

“Janine is the perfect fit for this role in so many ways,” said Courtney Schmidt, General Manager of Portland Cherry Bombs FC. “Her resume speaks for itself, but getting to know her made it clear that her relentless DIY spirit and deep commitment to her community are exactly what this team needs. I can’t wait to see her at the helm of our debut season!”

Janine Szpara will oversee all soccer operations - including player development, competitive strategy, and community engagement.
