Prior to the 2026 season, the Portland Thorns came into the season with two glaring question marks: defensive midfielder and center back.

Have those questions been completely answered? No. Do those needs still remain? Yes.

This upcoming primary transfer window will tell you everything you need to know about the club's ambitions for the rest of the year. The ownership of Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal alongside President & General Manager Jeff Agoos have an opportunity to make a mark in 2026 with a few more pieces.

If the ownership and front office truly believe they found their head coach in Robert Vilahamn, he needs to have the personnel to play his system. This isn't his roster he's working with – not yet at least.

Are they all in or content with the roster?

Summer Window Targets

Priorities: Defensive Midfielder and Center Back

It's very clear for the Portland Thorns to compete for the NWSL Shield and Championship, the club will need to shore up one of the two biggest weaknesses mentioned above.

The most dire need is at defensive midfielder. Without a true number six next to Jessie Fleming, the team will continue to struggle against opposing presses and to escape the initial line of pressure. They'll need a playmaker who can alleviate the
amount of responsibility currently put on the shoulders of Cassandra Bogere who needs more time to develop.

It would be a win now move. Here are some options:

Fūka Nagano - Liverpool DM

After departing from North Carolina Courage, Fūka Nagano has taken her game to new heights at Liverpool.

Jessie Fleming needs a proven, traditional, and playmaking six next to her. Nagano provides all of that and more.
