2026 is off to a bang for the Portland Timbers. But more of a "blow up in your face" kind of bang.
As reported this morning by several journalists, Timbers defensive midfielder, David Ayala is on the verge of a move to South Beach, where he is set to link up with Lionel Messi and company at Inter Miami CF.
🇦🇷 Sources: Inter Miami nearing a deal to acquire midfielder David Ayala from Portland Timbers. I'm told is a $2m cash trade. Ayala stays as U-22 initiative. Not done but close. Ayala out of contract at end of season. Timbers tried to engage new contract, but wasn't likely due to personal reasons.

Tom Bogert reports that the deal is set to be a $2 million cash trade, and Ayala will join the Herons as a U-22 initiative signing. Ayala joined the Timbers before the start of the 2022 season from Argentine side Estudiantes de La Plata.
Ayala has made 98 appearances in his time in Green and Gold and has cemented himself as one of Phil Neville's preferred players in defensive midfield. Ayala's contract in Portland is set to expire at the end of the 2026 season.

Today, the Portland Timbers made the official announcement of the Alex Bonetig (BON-eh-tig) signing. The contract is through the 2027-2028 season with a club option for the 2028-2029 season.
“We are pleased with the acquisition of Alex Bonetig and look forward to welcoming him to the Portland Timbers. He provides us with another quality option along our backline, and we expect him to generate competition for minutes immediately,” said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy. “Alex already has good professional experience for a younger player, and he possesses a skillset that gives him the potential to continue to progress.”
He earned 61 caps with the Western Sydney Wanderers. Bonetig is also knocking on the door with the Australian Men's National Team.
“We've been very impressed with Alex's performances in the A-League for some time, and believe he has all the attributes to be successful in MLS. He's a young and hungry player that will push this team to the next level," Timbers head coach Phil Neville shared. "We’re looking forward to bringing him in and hopefully developing him into a national team player while achieving great things with the Timbers.”
