Match Recap & Highlights: Portland Thorns vs Denver Summit

It was a night of celebration at Providence Park, with the honoring of Portland Thorns legend Tobin Heath and a 1-0 shutout victory for the home team.

Sophia Wilson would be the game's lone scorer in the 44th minute, but it would be Jayden Perry's defensive efforts in the 68th and 90th minutes that aided in recording this clean sheet for the Thorns, the first for the club since July 5th.

The Thorns have now climbed to 3rd place atop the NWSL's leaderboard after securing their third straight victory.

Lineups & Prematch

A lot has changed for the Thorns since the last time these two teams met just a month ago.

As we know, Olivia Moultrie has suffered a season-ending ACL tear, Morgan Weaver and Caiya Hanks have both made their returns to the pitch following their respective knee injuries, Nina Nijstad has made her Thorns debut, and throughout all of this the Thorns have suffered inconsistent results in what hasn't been the prettiest stretch of midseason performances.

However, back on the right side of things, picking up back-to-back wins in their last two games the Thorns have found themselves shorthanded yet again in a flurry of recent injuries.

But the Thorns aren't alone also facing some adversity, Denver's starting lineup has four new faces on it this evening after being hit with a handful of injuries in recent weeks – suffering the loss of both their starting goalkeeper and USWNT Captain Lindsey Heaps.

It's also worth mentioning that Robert Vilahamn will be making his return to the sideline tonight, after serving his one game suspension following the red card he received in Boston.

6' first opportunity for the Summit

In what's been a sloppy first six minutes of play from both teams, Portland's back line nearly gets beat, but due to Yazmeen Ryan's inability to convert the Summit remain off the scoreboard.

20' Soph gets the first attempt for Portland

With a shot from just outside the box, Sophia Wilson is able to settle for the Thorns for the first time tonight. Gobbled up by Denver's keeper Kat Asman, this could hopefully be the trigger that kick starts some offensive momentum for the home team.

22' JP yellow

Denver gets the ball right back in a threatening position, which is where Jayden Perry commits a foul – giving the Summit a great position for a free kick opportunity.

Yet, no damage is done.

In one of Pietra Tordin's most beautiful deliveries of the season, Wilson is given another chance (this time a bit closer to home), but misses just wide of goal.

In the first 15 minutes of this game we saw Denver vehemently trying to exploit Portland's defense on the long ball.

But you can't outdo the doer – Sophia Wilson.

After plenty of first half opportunities, Wilson finally finds the back of the net willing Portland to a 1-0 lead to close out the first half.

51' Soph brace! Kidding!

Wilson breaks free yet again and scores what would've been her second goal of the night, before the offsides flag goes up and the goal is brought back.

This demonstrates just how dangerous Portland's offense could've been tonight, had they have converted on all the opportunities they were given.

63' Kössler, again?

The third overt act of physicality from Melissa Kössler, and yet her name remains out of the book? A question that will surely remain for the Thorns (and their fanbase) upon the conclusion of this game.

64' substitution Portland

Mallie McKenzie replaces Deyna Castellanos, which reshapes things a bit for the Thorns in the 64th minute. McKenzie moves up in the formation in place of Marie Müller, and Pietra Tordin shifts to the 10.

68' What a save JP!

Put her in the keeper jersey, because Jayden Perry just kept this game as a clean sheet for Mackenzie Arnold.

After Jessie Fleming slips in the midfield Denver has numbers in the box, willing Mackenze Arnold to leave her line. However, it's JP with the sliding, kick save that maintains the Thorns 1-0 lead.

Renee Lyles exits the pitch making way for Caiya Hanks.

Hanks making a very early appearance in this game, in just her second game back from her ACL recovery, was allowed only five minutes in her 2026 season debut is ready to boast 20+ tonight. A privilege for all to witness 🙏🏼

Pietra Tordin to Sophia Wilson (this duo is lethal), but Wilson misses again! This time off the crossbar ... and I don't think this is something anyone has ever seen before, even Soph herself.

After being the victim of Janine Sonis' blatant physicality moments earlier, Caiya Hanks earns herself a yellow card – no doubt to honor the punches her team has endured from Denver throughout the night.

Final: Portland 1, Denver 0

Final Thoughts

A lot of this game resembled what we saw in Denver when these teams met for the first time a month ago. It was a physical, fast paced game, but one that Portland was better able to settle into on home turf.

And still, with a final score line of 1-0, I can't help but think of just how easily the tide could have shifted for the Thorns tonight. Because all it would've taken is one moment from Denver to completely change the shape and outcome of this game.

Nevertheless, a name that was called a lot tonight, Nina Nijstad. A motor, and a fresh spark all over the field, Nijstad is providing the respite both offensively and defensively that this team has been looking for in the absence of Sam Coffey.

Nijstad, alongside Perry, were my two saving graces for Portland tonight.

Should Portland continue to find their stride as we near the end of the regular season, I could see them as NWSL Shield contenders – but a big monster stands in their way at Gotham FC next Friday night.
