The Portland Thorns came into Sunday's match against Boston Legacy FC having dropped five consecutive on the road.
The NWSL expansion side were in the midst of their best stretch with three wins in the last five.
One team was on a downturn and the other just realizing their potential.

Head coach Robert Vilahamn opted for an unconventional starting XI, with only M.A. Vignola as the true fullback, and three center-backs on the backline.
In midfield, Deyna Castellanos would replace Olivia Moultrie who was out due to a knee injury.
On the frontline, Marie Müller would join Sophia Wilson and Pietra Tordin on the frontline.
For Boston Legacy? Aïssata Traoré and Amanda Gutierres would begin the game on the bench with Amanda Allen earning her first start alongside Sammy Smith.

First Half
It was a dream start for the Portland Thorns to the tune of three goals in the first 10 minutes with the team creating turnovers high up the pitch.
How historic was that? They broke their own record of 10:13 to score three goals, and did it in 9:38.
In the second minute, Pietra Tordin provided the free-kick magic from the top of the box.

In the sixth minute, the high press would yield more immediate dividends. Marie Müller slipped a ball into Soph Wilson for her ninth goal of the season. It would also be her eighth goal in the first 10 minutes of a match.

In the 10th minute, the high press would force yet another turnover. Jessie Fleming picked up the ball and played it to Wilson who dummied it off to Tordin for the 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately for PTFC, the defensive issues on the backline, especially in regards to box defending, showed up once again.
In the 31st minute, Sammy Smith was unmarked in box and swung in a ball to the far post with Bianca St-Georges beating M.A. Vignola to it.

Mackenzie Arnold became the fifth goalkeeper to record an assist in the 37th minute. On a long ball over the top, she hit Tordin in stride who picked up her head and chipped Murphy for her hat trick - becoming the seventh player with that honor.

Alba Caño took advantage of the open space ahead of her and fired home a rocket to trim the lead down to 2-4 at the half. The midfielder was allowed all the time in the world and acres of space.

Although it was Portland Thorns who were favored with the statistics in the first half, Boston Legacy had a considerable amount of the momentum and took advantage of the few opportunities they did have.
Yes, PTFC were relatively dominant, but kept the expansion side in it with a lack of box defending and defensive pressure on the two goals. For the fifth straight game, they allowed two or more goals.
Second Half
It was all Boston Legacy in the second half.
After seeing 48% possession, it dropped to 32% in the second half. And the home side controlled the proceedings the rest of the way.
The final 45 and stoppage time was marred by sloppy passing in the back and miscommunication everywhere. Although they were up two goals, it was only a matter of time before they gave up more.
Legacy forward Amanda Gutierres cut the lead down to 3-4 in the 82nd minute. Aleigh Gambone drew multiple defenders before slipping into to the unmarked 'Guti' - upon further review, there were multiple options on that sequence.
How poor have the defense been? With that score conceded, it was 14 goals allowed in their last five games.

The Thorns would sit in a low block the rest of the way and not look to counter outside of the occasional long ball over the top. And yes, you read that right, 65% passing accuracy in the second half.
Somehow the Rose City held on to secure their first road win in 99 days and snap their five-match away losing streak.
Even with the 4-3 win, there were way more questions than answers.
Reaction
No one learned anything new about the Portland Thorns in this matchup. Everything you knew about them prior to this match, did not change one bit...
Pietra Tordin is now tied in goal contributions with 15 (seven goals and eight assists), and Soph Wilson continues to lead the way with nine goals. The attack has never been questioned one bit and remains the only reason PTFC remain in matches at all.
The lingering concerns? The backline. There is more than enough talent to work with at FB, but the personnel at CB continue to be the Achilles heel of the squad.
How bad is the defense? They nearly wasted a magnificent performance from the frontline.
Presider and General Manager Jeff Agoos deserves a good amount of credit for the frontline, but also needs to take responsibility for the atrocious backline.
At this point, every match will play out the same way moving forward. Get accustomed to high scoring matches with little to no resistance.
