The Portland Thorns are back at the top of the NWSL table after defeating Bay FC 2-0 last night at Providence Park, and it was all defense for the Thorns.

With first-time goals from defenders MA Vignola and Mallie McKenzie, the team also broke an NWSL all-time record having not allowed a goal at home in 594 consecutive minutes of soccer in Rose City.

A night of firsts in Portland, as this team continues to prove why they've been the best team in the league through the first half of the season.

Lineups & Prematch

Two key pieces were missing from tonight's roster of available players for the Thorns, and one was to be expected, as Olivia Moultrie continues to nurse that calf injury.

However, there was no prior indication that Reilyn Turner would be missing tonight, as she was listed on the NWSL's availability report with a knee injury.

Tonight was the first time the Thorns have matched up against Bay FC this season, with two first year coaches in the NWSL going head to head and history on the line for the Thorns as they look to continue their unbeaten streak at home.

Highlights

11' Portland pressure

Portland applied nothing but pressure through the first 10 minutes of this one, and Bay barely escaped unscathed.

A stat flashed across my screen that I was surprised to see – the Portland Thorns lead the NWSL in goals in the first 15 minutes this season, with four. Come to think of it, though, this year's team of course owns that statistic, but if you would've told me this a year ago ...

19' It takes a yellow to stop Soph

Bay FC's defense is forced to commit the foul with a jersey tug on Sophia Wilson in order to hinder a breakaway opportunity from the midfield, something you only see done to players of Wilson's caliber.

30' What the NWSL said ⬇️

Vignola scores off the corner chaos created by Portland, by firing a shot into the back of the net from outside the box in her first goal as a Thorn. An absolutely incredible shot with an even better celebration by Portland.

42' Müller off the crossbar

Marie Müller bangs a shot off the crossbar, and is nearly the second Thorns defender to find the goal tonight. An opportunity that was created by Sophia Wilson, who in the first half caused nothing but trouble for Bay.

Halftime: Thorns 1, Bay 0

49' another corner opportunity

Jessie Fleming lofts a perfect ball to the head of Pietra Tordin, who barely sends it over the crossbar leaving Portland empty handed.

After a fiery start to the season, it has been nearly a month since we've seen her score, and it sure would've been nice to see her back in the goal game with that one.

65' The Thorns make NWSL history

The Portland Thorns have now gone 568 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to be scored on the Providence Park turf by an opponent – a new NWSL record.

Ironically enough, the last team to score a goal in Portland was Bay FC on October 4, 2025.

66' sub Portland

Mallie McKenzie replaces Mimi Alidou in the 66th minute.

72' Welcome home Kelli Hubly

A worthy ovation for Kelli Hubly as she takes the pitch for Bay FC, with fans commemorating her time spent as a Thorn where she helped bring an NWSL Championship to Portland in 2017 and 2022.

77' Mallie McKenzie FIRST NWSL GOAL

A beautiful finish from McKenzie has the Thorns defender looking like a true attacker as she gains her team some insurance approaching the 80th minute.

It was Wilson who drew the three defenders, before dishing her first assist of the season off to McKenzie – for a night of firsts in Portland.

86' triple (rookie) sub for Portland

The Thorns make some rather fun changes as they approach the final minutes, bringing three rookies onto the pitch.

Renee Lyles comes on for Marie Müller, Pietra Tordin exits in exchange for Shae Harvey, and making her NWSL debut, Jennie Immethun replaces Cassandra Bogere.

Final: Portland 2, Bay FC 0

Final Thoughts

There really is not much left for me to say about tonight's performance, other than to highlight what a cohesive and consistent brand of soccer that this year's team has played with so far, and how it was on display tonight.

For example, with MA Vignola and Mallie McKenzie's goal contributions tonight they became the 7th and 8th Thorns to score this season.

Moultrie and Turner were both missing from the lineup tonight, and Bay's defenders were on lock down (as best they could be) against Wilson. It was this team's all around versatility that allowed them to adapt in finding a way to win tonight, and that is what continues to breed dominance and confidence in Portland this season.
